MondlyVR: Learn new languages with Google Daydream and Cardboard
Learning a foreign language is an interesting way of immersing yourself in other cultures and thus facilitates many holiday trips. In the past, students were forced to spend their time in language courses in order to pursue knowledge acquisition. Nowadays, this is much easier: thanks to digitalization, apps and programs enable home learning. However, this is often bleak and one-sided. The new app MondlyVR from ATi Studio is used to enable language learning within the VR with a Google Daydream or Google Cardboard .
Learn new languages in VR
The new VR-app MondlyVR of ATi Studio helps inquisitive and students learning a new language in an interactive environment. This makes it possible to speak and interact with people in a virtual environment by means of voice recognition. There are various environments to choose from, such as a train ride or a restaurant visit. It is well known that one learns languages most easily when dealing with native speakers, and the app even demonstrates grammatical and semantic rules at the same time.
The app has a total of 30 different languages, including English, Japanese, Spanish, Mandarin and Finnish. Even different levels of difficulty are integrated. Users can choose between 14 options – from beginners to native speakers. Unfortunately the language app is not yet perfect. It still works quite well in European languages, however, as soon as one has ventured into unfamiliar languages with a different pronunciation and emphasis, such as Mandarin, the speech recognition decreases significantly.
In this case, a text box shows how the speech recognition transcripts the pronunciation. However, even with correct input, the learning sequence does not continue with the learning sequence because of a lack of interpretation of the pronunciation. Nevertheless MondlyVR offers a nice way to learn a language. Various flaws will perhaps be improved in the future.
The MondlyVR app is available for $4.99 on Google Store until the end of September . The VR app is compatible with Google Daydream and Google Cardboard .
