Samsung Galaxy Note 8 fits in old Gear VR

Concurrent with the Galaxy Note 8 has Samsung a new Gear VR announced that is compatible with the stylus smartphone. Now a freshly baked owner of Note 8 has tested whether the smartphone does not fit into the VR glasses holder of the previous generation. The result: Yes. Samsung nevertheless advises against it.

First test with Note 8 and the old Gear VR: Fits

According to UploadVR, Josue Feliciano has tested his freshly received Galaxy Note 8 together with the last generation of the Gear VR and could not detect any problems. Jamie Feltham from the website asked Samsung about how the compatibility of the two devices was ordered. The answer from the Korean manufacturer: You need the newly introduced Gear VR . These can now be pre-ordered and go on sale on 15 September. Feliciano then sent a video to the editor. It shows that the Galaxy Note 8 easily fits into the old holder and works. In fact, the dimensions between the Galaxy S8 Plus and Note 8 are not all that different: 74.8 x 162.5 x 8.6 mm at Note 8 are 73.4 x 159.5 x 8.1 mm on the Galaxy S8 Plus . The screen of Note 8 is just 0.1 inches larger.

The manufacturer’s response

Feltham did not let loose and confronted Samsung with the facts. The manufacturer’s response was somewhat cryptic this time: “We have developed a new Gear VR that takes the shape factor of the Galaxy Note 8 into account and ensures backward compatibility. We do not recommend using Note 8 in older Gear VR headsets. ” Samsung did not give a more detailed explanation of why you should not do that.
